Overview of Heart Disease

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, accounting for 32% of all deaths worldwide. Unhealthy lifestyle and diet, as well as genetic variants involved in diseases such as endothelial dysfunction, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension collectively increase the risk of heart disease. Depending on the pathogenesis of heart diseases, they can be classified as congenital heart diseases and acquired heart diseases.

• Congenital Heart Disease (CHD)
  CHD is caused by malformations of the heart resulting from abnormal heart development during fetal life, such as ventricular septal defects and atrial septal defects.
• Acquired Heart Disease (AHD)
  As opposed than CHD, AHD is a general term for heart diseases caused by acquired factors. It can be classified into coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, rheumatic heart disease, infectious heart disease, hypertensive heart disease, and pulmonary heart diseases according to their causes.
