Development of Stem Cell-Based Therapy for Stroke

Due to the limitations of existing treatments, new stroke therapies are needed. Stem cells have the ability to proliferate, self-renew and differentiate into various functional cells under certain conditions. Currently, many studies are devoted to investigating the great potential of stem cells in the treatment of various diseases. A large number of these studies have been conducted on the use of various types of stem cells for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Stem cell-based therapies for stroke aim to promote neurogenesis and replace lost neurons or protect surviving neurons to improve neurological recovery. Bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to have immunomodulatory properties that inhibit post-stroke inflammation and potentially improve recovery.
