Blood Glutamate Scavenger Development for Stroke

Glutamate is involved in the pathological process of excitotoxicity, and after stroke, excess glutamate in the cerebrospinal fluid damages and kills neuronal cells. In response to the failure of strategies to interfere with glutamate activity, another approach has been proposed to neutralize the deleterious effects of glutamate by eliminating excess glutamate from the brain by lowering blood glutamate levels, thereby accelerating the outflow of glutamate from the brain into the blood. Animal studies have shown that glutamate scavengers are effective in reducing blood glutamate concentrations and improving neurological outcomes after traumatic brain injury and stroke in rats.
