Advantages of Minipigs for Ocular Disease Research

Ocular diseases seriously affect the quality of life of human beings worldwide. Despite rapid advances in ophthalmology research, eye disease remains a significant challenge. The development of new drugs and drug delivery mechanisms, as well as advanced ophthalmic technologies requires appropriate animal models to support them. Minipigs have been used extensively in ocular preclinical studies to assess the safety and efficacy of topical, intravitreal and subretinal drug administration as a representative of other non-rodent species. This is mainly due to the many similarities between pig eyes and human eyes, which is reflected in: 1) The size of minipig eyes and lenses is the closest to human eyes. 2) The intraocular distribution of melanin in minipigs is most similar to human eyes. 3) The vitreous humor of minipigs has a similar composition to the human vitreous, making them ideal for testing retinal therapies. 4) The lenses of minipig eyes are smaller, reducing the likelihood of iatrogenic cataracts after the surgical intervention. 5) Minipigs' retina is very similar to humans.
