Customized Minipig Models of Retinal Vein Occlusion

Large animals are an essential research step in ophthalmic drug development to clinical application. Ace Therapeutics' researchers have successfully established a minipig model of retinal vein occlusion. This model can help our clients study retinal diseases characterized by retinal edema and ischemia-hypoxia, thus elucidating mechanisms of action that can be used to improve existing therapies. Here, our highly qualified scientists work closely with you every step of the way, providing the highest quality and most convenient service and support.

Minipig Models of Laser-Induced Experimental Retinal Vein Occlusion

What Is Uveal Melanoma?

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO), a common cause of macular edema and ischemic maculopathy, is often associated with severe vision loss and is the second most common retinal vascular disease after diabetic retinopathy. RVO risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, increasing age, glaucoma, etc. According to the site of obstruction, RVO is divided into central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). Currently, there is no effective clinical treatment for RVO patients, and about 40% to 60% of patients diagnosed with RVO require perennial intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Understanding the molecular mechanisms of RVO is a key factor in improving the treatment of this condition. Therefore, robust animal models are needed to study disease mechanisms and test the efficacy and potential toxicity of novel therapies or develop improved therapeutic therapies. The porcine model has many advantages that make it an animal model for experimental RVO. These include anatomical similarity to humans, ease of surgical and diagnostic procedures, and ease of use.

Service Overview

Ace Therapeutics is a full-service ophthalmology preclinical CRO. For over a decade, our researchers provide our clients with a variety of internally validated, high-quality ocular disease models. We are now proud to offer a minipig laser-induced retinal vein occlusion (RVO) model. These models can help you understand the complex molecular mechanisms activated in RVO to gain insights into the biology of the disease or intervention you are studying and, in addition, help you elucidate mechanisms of action that may be used to improve existing therapies.

Explore Ace Therapeutics' Minipig Models of Laser-Induced Experimental Retinal Vein Occlusion

Ace Therapeutics provides two minipig retinal vein occlusion models to global customers, the experimental branch retinal vein occlusion model and the experimental central retinal vein occlusion model.

  • Experimental branch retinal vein occlusion model

Ace Therapeutics' researchers use a standard argon laser (532 nm) to induce experimental branch vein occlusion in minipigs near the optic nerve head.

Model characteristics: Retinal hemorrhage and retinal vein dilation were observed upstream of the occlusion site, resulting in leakage and shunting to nearby veins.

  • Experimental central retinal vein occlusion model

Ace Therapeutics' researchers induce experimental central vein occlusion in minipigs using a standard argon laser (532 nm) on 3-4 retinal veins bordering the optic nerve head.

Model characteristics: Complete occlusion of 3-4 retinal veins leads to severe ischemia, constituting critical ischemic CRVO. This model corresponds to non-ischemic CRVO.

Available Support Services

To characterize the success of model building and test the potential efficacy of therapeutic drugs, Ace Therapeutics also provides the following supporting endpoint evaluation services, including but not limited to:

  • Fundus photography.
  • Retina Optical coherence tomography (OCT).
  • Fluorescein angiography.
  • Histopathology.
  • Immunochemistry.
  • Characterization of retinal müller cell proteins.

Ace Therapeutics minipigs model of laser-induced experimental retinal vein occlusion has been verified by a large number of experiments, which can accelerate your research on retinal diseases. With the rich experience accumulated in completing multiple projects, we are confident to be your most reliable partner.
