Retinal detachment (RD), a separation of the neurosensory retina from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), is a serious ophthalmological disease leading to photoreceptor cell death and potentially irreversible vision loss. Preclinical research relies heavily on animal models to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms of RD and evaluate novel therapeutic interventions. At Ace Therapeutics, we specialize in developing customized rabbit models of retinal detachment, leveraging our expertise in preclinical research to provide invaluable tools for the investigation of RD.
Retinal detachment occurs when the retina separates from the underlying RPE, disrupting its metabolic support and leading to photoreceptor cell death. This disease can be classified into three main types: rhegmatogenous, tractional, and exudative. Rhegmatogenous RD, the most common form, is often caused by retinal breaks due to vitreoretinal traction or other factors. Tractional RD occurs due to mechanical forces pulling the retina away, while exudative RD results from fluid accumulation beneath the retina without breaks.
Rabbit models are particularly advantageous for studying RD due to their anatomical and physiological similarities to human eyes. Various methods, including the injection of hyaluronidase, can induce retinal detachment in these models, providing insights into the dynamics of the condition and potential treatment modalities.
