Advantages of Canines for Ocular Disease Research

Animal models of human disease facilitate experiments aimed at elucidating disease mechanisms and evaluating therapeutic strategies. The high failure rate of ophthalmic clinical trials today is largely due to the lack of suitable animal models, mainly: 1) the obvious anatomy and physiology of routinely studied animals (rabbits, mice, rats) differ from human differences and are not representative of affected populations. 2) Studies performed in healthy eyes do not take into account physiological disturbances in ocular homeostasis in diseased eyes. Unlike traditional laboratory animals, spontaneous ocular disease in canines better reflects complex genetic, environmental, and physiological changes in humans. In addition, the canine's large eyes make surgery easier. These advantages make canines the most suitable models for the study of eye diseases that have a huge social impact on humans.
