Glaucoma is a collective term for a group of conditions with similar conditions, all possessing certain signs and symptoms, that are different types of glaucoma. These different types of glaucoma are all characterized by damage to the optic nerve, which may eventually lead to blindness.
Although there are many different types of glaucoma, they can be broadly classified into two main groups, open-angle glaucoma and closed-angle glaucoma.
Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma. It is a type of glaucoma disease that has different forms of vision loss, visual field loss, and optic nerve atrophy caused by the opening of the flow angle and an increase in intraocular pressure.
It is the most common type of glaucoma, accounting for about 60% to 70% of all glaucoma. It is thought to be caused by a change in some structures in the aqueous pathway, but the structures in the angle are not essentially narrowed or obstructed, resulting in a lack of aqueous flow from the atrium and an increase in intraocular pressure.
Secondary open-angle glaucoma is an eye disease caused by the presence of other eye diseases or physical diseases that increase intraocular pressure. It can be triggered by a family history of glaucoma, high myopia, inflammation of the eye, history of trauma or surgery, drugs, abnormal blood pressure, mental stress and anxiety.
It is also a common type of glaucoma that is caused by closure of the anterior chamber angle of the eye and obstruction of the drainage of aqueous humor from the eye. In these forms of glaucoma, there is a mechanical problem with the drainage angle of the eye, which means the drainage of aqueous from the atrium is blocked causing an increase in intraocular pressure. This type of glaucoma typically presents with extreme eye pain and sudden attacks.
Although there are many forms of glaucoma, the only factor that can be changed to treat glaucoma is the intraocular pressure. With this goal in mind, we are researching and developing drugs and therapies to treat a range of glaucoma.
