In order to maintain normal intraocular pressure (IOP), the outflow of aqueous humor from the trabecular meshwork must be balanced with its production. IOP will rise to high levels if the trabecular meshwork is not draining properly, leading to glaucoma. Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axonal degeneration and cell body apoptosis can be observed in glaucoma. It has been shown that RGC apoptosis in glaucoma is closely related to the increase of IOP.
