Gene Description | NUFIP1 was identified as an RNA-binding protein shuttling between the nucleus and cytoplasm, and it associates with ribosomes in functional synaptoneurosomes. Reports have shown that NUFIP1 can function as a receptor for starvation-induced ribophagy to maintain protein homeostasis. Ribophagy is a selective form of autophagy targeting ribosomes. Lysosomal levels of NUFIP1 were increased upon inhibition of autophagy. Ribophagy was dependent on the ability of ribosome-associated NUFIP1 to interact with LC3B via a conserved LC3-interacting region domain and recruit ribosomes to the autophagosome. Loss of NUFIP1 or its LC3B binding ability inhibited cell survival following starvation. |
