Gene Description | Mitochondrially-encoded ATP Synthase Membrane Subunit 6 is a product of MT-ATP6, one of 13 protein-encoding genes in the mitochondrial genome. MT-ATP6 comprises one subunit of the transmembrane F1FO ATP synthase, which catalyzes the final step of oxidative phosphorylation in the electron transport chain. A number of mutations in the MT-ATP6 gene have been identified that lead to defects in oxidative phosphorylation. Many of these are strongly associated with distinct disease states, including Leigh syndrome and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. |
