Gene Description | Mfsd2a is a sodium-dependent lysophosphatidylcholine symporter. It regulates lipid metabolism, growth and development, and motor function. It transports lysophosphatidylcholines consisting of omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid or other long-chain fatty acids. Mfsd2a was shown to be critical for the brain to take up DHA from plasma. Furthermore, Mfsd2a is required for the blood-brain barrier formation and function. Lipids transported into endothelial cells in the central nervous system by Mfsd2a form a lipid environment essential to maintain BBB integrity. |
