In Vivo Modeling of Diabetic Cataract

In Vivo Modeling of Diabetic Cataract

At Ace Therapeutics, we specialize in developing animal models of cataracts with pathologies similar to human diabetic cataracts, for use in studies of the pathogenesis and pharmacological treatment of diabetic cataracts.

Overview of Diabetic Cataract

Diabetes mellitus can cause a number of complications in the eye; cataract is considered to be one of the most important causes of visual impairment among diabetic patients. Individuals with diabetes have a fivefold increased risk for the development of cataract, especially early in life.

Although surgery is the primary treatment for cataracts, it may be accompanied by infection, hemorrhage, or other complications of accelerated retinopathy. Thus, the prevention of any complication by maintaining blood sugar levels delays the development of cataracts. Establishment of stable models in animals with diabetic cataract is highly necessary to improve our knowledge and search for potential therapies of diabetic cataracts.

Our Modeling Services for Diabetic Cataracts

Our extensive experience in diabetes research enables us to provide our clients with high quality animal models of diabetic cataract. These models can be used to elucidate key molecular pathways and metabolic disorders that contribute to the development and progression of diabetic cataracts, as well as to efficiently evaluate diabetic cataract-related drugs.

  • Selection of Model Species
Animal Species Advantages
Rodents (Wistar or SD rats, etc.)
  • Shorter survival cycle
  • With the characteristic changes of diabetic cataracts similar to those of humans, it is favorable to observe the dynamic changes of diabetic cataracts in a certain period.
Small and medium-sized mammals (Beagle, New Zealand white rabbit, etc.)
  • More adaptable
  • Easy to control their environmental conditions
  • Model Construction Methods

In view of the observation period of the animal model and the economy of the experiment, we mainly help our clients establish the animal models of diabetic cataracts through chemical induction methods. Modifications can be made to the diabetes induction protocols to alter the duration of hyperglycemia exposure, and complementary interventions, such as dietary manipulations or pharmacological treatments, can be incorporated into customized models that best address your key questions.

  • Streptozotocin (STZ) induction
  • STZ + high fat and high sugar diet induction
  • Alloxan induction
  • STZ + Alloxan induction
  • D-galactose induction

Our Analysis Services for Diabetic Cataract Research

Ace Therapeutics provides a comprehensive suite of analytical services for your research.

  • Chemical Indication Analysis of Lens NCEND
We are able to test many oxidative stress and injury-related indicators: SOD, GSH-Px, O2-, NO, MDA, vitamin E, and TAC.
  • Analysis of lens structure
Our team can study the detailed structure of the lens of an animal model using techniques such as slit-lamp biomicroscopy, confocal microscopy, and optical coherence tomography; quantify the extent of lens clouding; and provide data reports with insight.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for details on how we can tailor our services to suit your needs. Whether your study aims at defining the molecular mechanisms of lens opacification, investigating the contribution of oxidative stress to cataract development, or characterizing new drug therapies, our team is ready to cooperate with you.
